They are building a new road. I am not saying that modernizing national road 19 is unnecessary, but why build a dual carriageway to a town of fewer than twenty thousand people? I doubt anyone still believes in massive trade with Belarus anyway — in fact, even the woman at the Voivodeship Office who let me review the environmental permit for this investment did not really know why such a highway should run right up to the border with a state that is unfriendly to us. Yet they are building it anyway. Trees are already being cut, and soon there will be digging, drainage, and pouring concrete. Why does civilizational progress always have to mean irreversible destruction of nature?
