Rivers, streams, floodplains, marshes, springs. In the Knyszyn Forest, water is always nearby — even a hillside can surprise you with a slow-seeping trickle, let alone the depressions where life rages in the ever-present moisture.

But it is also true that the forest is drying out. Snowless winters, springs dry as tinder, scorching summers. The water level keeps falling, and the sight of a dried-out stream is becoming more common.
